Heading to the meetup at House of Shields
David has been listening for a long time
A very long time
He was in college, birthday, marriage to attorney
Look back at things that have happened while we have been doing the show
Schlomo gave us the space
It was dark, with a kicked over chair
That is HoS
Russ got a pre-smoking ban chair with an ashtray built into it
This is where we made the mistake
We started drinking right away, heavily
Jeanie kept up with me drink for drink
Mind you she is one third my size
We left the meetup to go dancing
More drinks
Then Jeanie starts dancing with a bearded Marylin Monroe
Having a great time and we stiffed them on the cab
Just drunk bitches we were
We gotta get to sleep
We have things to do the next day
We surface at 10 am
Jeanie didn't get out of bed till 3
I see a pattern with your Jeanie vacations
Remember Chef Jeff?
Back in my skinny days
Now I'm chubby
There's a food shortage I'm good for 8 weeks
At 8pm Mrs. and Mrs Smith are going to hop on a romantic cruise
They should have named it, "The Good Ship Jagermeister"
A little romantic music for you
If I tried to do that with my friends Evan or Mike
So the next day we rent a car
And we end up dumped in a pile of homeless people
They're like day of the dead zombies
Here comes the scariest wican beast i have ever seen in my life
This weather beaten hag pops up in the window
Shit happens, some people aren't what you expect
Are we on the road to Guerneville?

How to save your unconference

As far an unconferences go WordCamp 2007 hasn't been that different from many of the others that I have attended; hit and miss, but mostly miss. David Spark sums up the experience pretty well.

Here's my two cents as an attendee at many events like this:

1) Unprepared speakers
2) Awesome hallway conversations

The only way to have an unconference that gets people excited about coming back again, i.e. PodCamp New York, or speaking about the event is to manage number 1 above. Bring that hallway enthusiasm to the stage.

Unconference organizers should be in contact with their speakers dialogging about how to make their event useful to attendees, memorable, something that makes an impact in their daily lives. Nobody wants to sit and listen to what are essentially product diatribes or be spoken to like they are children.

How to save your unconference:

1) Plan, plan and plan some more. Plan everything and have a plan for it your plan doesn't work (because it is an unconference doesn't mean that attendee expectations are lower when they walk through the door than they would be for the $1000 conference that you bemoan)

2) Tell your speakers to get prepared (this is a golden opportunity to share experiences that can help people not make the same mistakes)

3) Create attendee tracks (create unconference value by allowing a channel for filtered conversations a.k.a. hallway conversations)

This post might not come off like it, but I am a big fan of unconferences. However, I am beginning to think that the best conferences might be a mix of the traditional and the new step-child. Maybe that is what I'll experience at Gnomedex next month. We'll see.

Tags: WordCamp 2007 unconference halwaay conversations Swedish American Hall

As far an unconferences go WordCamp 2007 hasn't been that different from many of the others that I have attended; hit and miss, but mostly miss. David Spark sums up the experience pretty well.

Here's my two cents as an attendee at many events like this:
What are my moobs and dairy snakes worth? Let us know above in the banner with your support
A little guilt borrowed from NPR
What is one year of Croncast worth to you?
That is one 32nd of a server payment
Wrapping Kris in postal tape to make cleavage
And Betsy will sell access online
What to do with the show
Have all the girls . . . women that Kris dated
Especially when they bring their 30 year old kids
Gotta keep Kristine in tube tops
Made from truck tire tubes
Sapp Bros. on the corner of Plank Road and I-80
With my hot coffee came a hot flash of snatch from Mr. B's past
Something nasty probably happened to your coffee
Which one was this? What! Which truck stop ho was this?!?!?
We ate the truck stop all the time . . . either there or hardies
Who was she?
She's the one who grew up and worked at a truck stop
So what do you bring with you from your youth?
The chicken chute checker
Besides your emotional baggage
These are Kris's jeans from 20 years ago
We had bunk beds
No I didn't have the Outerspace mattresses
We had cheap bunk beds
The kinds you could take apart
Cutting the legs with a chainsaw to make them level
This way . . . two equal beds
Happy belated birthday brother, though you don't listen
Karma was kicking Kris's ass this last week
Even today it has been harsh
It must have been the poking of Unitarians
Well, Mr. B . . . I washed and dried your video iPod
Yep
I wasn't going to tell you
Hey, kick me while I'm down . . . one in a long line of things
Life altering events all week long
Well now Mr. B you can run down to Wal-Mart and get a foPod
I'm sorry that karma is kicking your ass . . . but my week has been awesome
Let me check my watch for the karma shift
(What ensues are short show notes for a great Betsy story. Watch the beverage drinking in public . . . I kid you not.)
Betsy turns her mom out . . . garage sale style
We are going to do a live show here in Naperville . . . hopefully in July. We'd like to get about 40 people to come out so we can have the joint for about 2 hours. That means you need to get your friends to come out too. Let us know if you can swing it.

What are my moobs and dairy snakes worth? Let us know above in the banner with your support
A little guilt borrowed from NPR
What is one year of Croncast worth to you?
That is one 32nd of a server payment
Wrapping Kris in postal tape to make cleavage
And Betsy will sell access online
What to do with the show
Have all the girls . . . women that Kris dated
Especially when they bring their 30 year old kids
Gotta keep Kristine in tube tops
Made from truck tire tubes
Sapp Bros. on the corner of Plank Road and I-80
With my hot coffee came a hot flash of snatch from Mr. B's past
Something nasty probably happened to your coffee
Which one was this? What! Which truck stop ho was this?!?!?
We ate the truck stop all the time . . . either there or hardies
Who was she?
She's the one who grew up and worked at a truck stop
So what do you bring with you from your youth?
The chicken chute checker
Besides your emotional baggage
These are Kris's jeans from 20 years ago
We had bunk beds
No I didn't have the Outerspace mattresses
We had cheap bunk beds
The kinds you could take apart
Cutting the legs with a chainsaw to make them level
This way . . . two equal beds
Happy belated birthday brother, though you don't listen
Karma was kicking Kris's ass this last week
Even today it has been harsh
It must have been the poking of Unitarians
Well, Mr. B . . . I washed and dried your video iPod
Yep
It's your birthday Kris . . . how about some home repairs
My osteoporosis kicks in and dust flies from my lungs
Listening to eat Bears is like listening to a one man band
He's not hot he's geriatric
Digging through saggy skin to find
Betsy, are you one to be talking about that
Fake beer night on the Croncast
Betsy is drinking Clausthauer and I have the Beck's N/A
You were late for your own party Kris!
What about your gifts? Shampoo is a winner
What is going to happen when Betsy reaches 31 in two months?
The wonderful thing is that you'll always be older Mr. B
Betsy is a vicious ageist
Cycling through topics
A rehash of the making it to 300 and doing shows everyday
Filling our lives with craziness again for donations
Not like the NPR $1 million bounty for Morning Edition
Even the Germans are in on this one
Concerns about the donations
Slowsky at the dealership
She sits like the Sears tower in Nebraska
Betsy admits to being a conservative . . . in some cases
She may be a moderate now
Voting your conscience and not your tax dollars
The bathroom is falling apart today, see above photo
So happy birthday Mr. B now fix the house
The plan: we will be taking off the month of March 2007

Betsy and I were on Morning Stories today.

A great pdocast which most of you already know but for those of you who aren't familiar with Morning Stories it is a podcast produced by Tony Kahn from WGBH in Boston.

Thank you, Tony and Gary, for making us a part of Morning Stories.

Croncast listeners should also know that without some encouraging words very early on in podcasting from Tony, we might not have continued on this path.

So when you hear Tony hosting the World on NPR or any other radio show, think of him as I do, a podcaster first and the warm voice of meaningful stories.

Croncast - Betsy and her husband Kris Ep. 75

It's here! Friday's show is the late nighter that we promised.

Thansk again to everyone who has sent messages of concern for us and our family. But everything is cool. No illnesses, troubles or double chins with mold; we are on track.

We have ben very busy with good stuff that we will talk about next week. This good stuff has nothing to do with podcasting or eBay.

Betsy took me to see the first live recording of NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me! in Chicago as a gift for being sick all day on Thursday. A couple things happened at the show that were really cool besides being at the first one they will record for their new format.

One was that Betsy and I were interviewed about the show by a Chicago Tribune reporter. Of course I had to drop that we were podcasters. So maybe in Saturdays paper the reporter will mention it. Maybe we'll get cut but it was cool nonetheless, as I run out the door to go buy the paper this morning and check.

The second was that the host of the show, Peter Sagal, was meeting people in the lobby and signing autographs. I got this special little write up on mine. We are Peter Sagal's favorite podcasters. Proof below.

First we must give the shout out to Joerg from Germany for being the first to support Croncast during this pledge week. Thanks Joerg!

We start off today's show with a look back at one of the funniest pop art things ever sold on eBay like a year or two ago, the post menapausal raging hormone barbie. Then Betsy makes sure that she gets into last nights play group and how suburban life has manifested itself into one big spending spree on intangibles.

Back in the glory days Kris was a BMX'n boy. The rest of the show goes like this, a baby shower for Kris at work (I guess it is Kris with a 'K') which is a party for having successful unprotected sex, mankind's greatest achievement is birth control, the epideral breakdown from the man's birth, marketign of health care, Betsy is a sale junkie, the pledge drive and Betsy's random collection of talking teletubbies.

The idea for my show is the same as a million others but I am going to force myself to have a daily show that is available by 3 p.m. CST for the commute home. I'll be doing interviews and discussions, topics will vary and hopefully next week some comedy skits.

For Friday November 12, 2004 I am doing a special show that will focus on favorite Chris/Kris moments. What? Everybody know at least one Chris/Kris, male or female. Send me a link to or an email attachement of your favorite or memorable Chris/Kris moment and I will stick it into my show on Friday. The original idea for this show was to have my family and friends tell me how good this Kris is, but I thought it would be more fun to talk about every Chris/Kris that people know and not necessarily myself.

These can be good or bad Chris/Kris experiences but not phony ones or name replacements of some other funny story that doesn't have a Chris/Kris in them. If you send in one that I use I will whore myself out and plug your site, podcast. . . anything that you want. Send responses to k@kristophersmith.com. If I don't receive anything then you will just have to listen to all the glory and idiot things that this Chris/Kris has done.
