Maggie is sick with croup and flu with fever
It's one half of a show
What story you tell doesn't start this way?
My pockets were loaded
I don't trust my purse
You shouldn't
Nope

I've been getting a lot of searches for "Jeff Probst interview" the past week since my post about the client work with did with Jeff and thought that some of you might be interested in downloading the hour and a half 455mb interview that he did with Tom Green last month.

I'm a fan of Tom Green and dig what he is doing with his show . . . hanging out, having some drinks, call-ins, skype-ins and big name guests in a lo-fi environment (it's Tom, the guest and the tech or two).

With that said, constructive criticism to follow, I'm not a fan of Tom's hired guns' web design, RSS prowess or the podcast consistency. I really like the show and want to see it meet some level of current web proficiency, also known as "nerds that get it".

Problem 1 is that the process of downloading a tom Green show is difficult. Problem 2, symptom of Problem 1, is that shows are streaming or progressive download (pseudo streaming) from the site. Problem 3 is that the RSS link for "Podcast" on the site goes directly to the Tom Green iTunes page . . . in iTunes and not the browser OR the real RSS feed.

Would it be too much to actually link to the RSS feed like this? I think not. My other issue with the RSS feed is that it only includes Apple RSS tags. Which means the display in other programs like FireAnt.tv is sans description or links back to the originating source, a.k.a www.tomgreen.com., where one might find more information about the episode.

Problem 4, the show looks good on Apple TV and the podcast releases are about as consistent as a Golden Girls' bowel movement. The live show is done week nights, when Tom isn't traveling around. The podcasted version takes days, sometimes weeks to show up in the feed. With the live version being semi-consistent the podcasted version should follow, just good form.

Tom, listen to me. Get nerds who can deliver your media and distribute it to the widest possible audience.

Tags: Tom Green podcast Jeff Probst tom green rss feed web proficiency pseudo streaming

Lachie asked and he shall receive a few days late, but now is better than never.

Three weeks ago, or so, I posted about the Skype phone research that I had done. All completed with the intent to purchase a Skype phone that wouldn't let me down. My general needs were a. that it had a speaker phone for hands free without headset and b. that Skype was embedded on the handset so that I could use the phone without Skype running on my computer.

I found two phones that met my need pretty quickly, the Netgear SPH101 and the Belkin Wifi phone. They had Skype in the handset, had speaker phones and had the added ability of connecting to the internet via Wifi. Sweet!

I didn't take this process lightly because I needed something that would work right out of the box. I read all the reviews I could find. Most negative ones I chalked up to the writer being a newb or not understanding the technology they had purchased and not savvy enough overcome some missing instructions or outdated drivers.

Not heeding this great free advice, because "I know better", I bought the Netgear SPH101. I was stoked. And after using it for 6 hours I was pissed. Here's what was (is) wrong with this thing:

1. The phone has a USB port that only works for powering up the phone
2. The version of Skype on the phone can only be updated via Wifi
3. Update must be run via PC to the IP address of the phone through a proprietary application, not via USB
4. Without the update the legacy version of Skype on the phone causes errors with Skype on your PC when both are running
5. No chat support (I knew this when purchasing but didn't realize what a drag it is without it)
6. The quality would have been better with tin cans
7. Speaker phone dropped 1/3 of other side of conversation

I spent nearly 2 days trying to get the phone working. I pinged it's internal IP, yup it had connection and didn't drop a packet, but when you ran the update through Netgear's software I would get an error telling me that I had the wrong IP. Huh? Your software told me the IP and my router has it listed and I'm pinging the shit out of it.

It was at this point that I broke down and called Netgear's support line. I never call tech support. But this time it was a must because some super nerd made this phone with capabilities that only someone at a call center in India could understand. If this is true I will never know. The three times that I called and waited on hold in excess of 45 minutes each time I was allowed the luxury of leaving a voice mail.

Take this nerd's words of advice and walk quickly away from this phone. Don't even let it's little white cuteness into your gaze because this little siren will wreck your ship. That is your nerd pirate ship of tech conquests. I spit on the Netgear SPH101.

Tags: Netgear SPH101 SPH101 SPH 101 nerd pirate ship tech conquests Belkin Wifi phone

Lachie asked and he shall receive a few days late, but now is better than never.

Three weeks ago, or so, I posted about the Skype phone research that I had done. Betsy shook me down for old equipment to sell on eBay
She sold my brown Zune to some sorry soul
Yeah, I thought it sucked
iTunes is so far ahead of where Microsoft wants to be
The store is a science . . . MS doesn't have a chance starting so far behind
Sold to the Columbus Arts Council
Yes, you're right Bears
Manipulating the Land of Nod staff with crying babies
The best day is to go the first day of the month for mark downs
Why it is no longer a purse business

Three months ago I created a podcast management system. Part of that development was tracking everything that happens with all files, especially RSS. Being a huge stats nerd I freaked when I kept getting regular hits from this ip: 72.3.228.221 to my main RSS feed where the User Agent was null. WTF, a null user agent?

So a little due diligence I found the IP is part of Podshow's block at RackSpace. I skype Chris from Podcast Alley, cause I knew him way back before Podshow, and asked him what was up. Oh yeah, the IP was asking for authentication when I visited so I couldn't see what going on.

I asked him what they were doing with the feeds. His reply was that they were caching them. No big deal. Still problematic in a sense that I am not pinging them to send them an update, but whatever, they got a plan and caching isn't inherintly evil. At this time I requested him to add the User Agent information to the script they were using to pull the feeds. That never happened.

Needless to say I shared this information with a couple of podcasters who immediately blocked the the IP address. But I didn't. So for the last three months they have been hitting not only my feed but the feeds of many other people every half hour and caching them.

But this is where the problem comes in. Yesterday with the botched launch of the new Podshow+. I took a look at the IP which was no longer asking for authentication and took a look around. I look at it like if my feed is public and you are using it in your site and your IP is public and broadcast to my database I can use it too. So I took a look around. Yikes!

I found my feed . . . or did I? What I found as others are finding or any podcaster whether they belong to the network or are paid by podshow is that they are re-writing the cached feeds!! Yup. Changing tags, truncating data, modifying the RSS generator tag to say "Podshow Delivery Network" (Update: it reads "PodShow PDN") and . . . and rewriting the original URL of the feed that they cached. Are you kidding? They don't even link to my original feed. So how would I know people are even subscribed? I wouldn't and they would. More incentive to join their network I guess.

If people weren't sure about Podshow's intent to make money off the back of every podcaster then this is a sure sign that if they did't they sure do now. The fact that Podshow is purporting even at this early stage to be the proprietor of all podcasters is a joke. The arrogance to think that we all somehow owe them or should allow them to rewrite our feeds because their network is the be all end all signals that this is the end for them.

If you would like to stop Podshow from caching your feed and rewriting it as they roll Podcast Alley, Podsafe Music Network and the Podshow home page into the mega Podshow+ PDN then block this IP: 72.3.228.221.

Update: It appears as of 12 a.m. on July 7th the Podshow caching bot or script was turned off. But have some fun checking your logs for their IP address I bet it's there.

Update two: If you would like to see some screen shots and read more of this discussion check out Michael Geoghegan's post or Todd Cochrane's.
Betsy and her husband Kris June 12, 2006

Thus begins our sharing of a vacation that ended 5 days early. We are not quite sure that our big summer vacaction driving to Denver in Slowsky was really a vacation. But we are sure that we will never drive anywhere on vacation again.

What we can say about our trip is that with the help of many lucid memories and five days to regain our footing on solid ground that we would like to bring your our trip in three separate podcasts. There is too much to share in a single 30 to 40 minute podcast that deserves great attention to detail.

What do you call a thousand mile trip in you wife's savings account? If you're us, show prep.

The long, feel good intro
Sending email easy like
When we last left you it was June 2 of 2006 a millenia ago
Things were much simpler then
H.G. Wells Time machine could take us back
Walking hand in hand with your spuse at the beach
I would have liked to have decided not to go on vacation
We should have flown
Short version, we leave, there's trouble and we come home five days early
Here we go
We're going to rcap the whole thing in 3 shows
It is June 2, 2006 in nice and sunny Naperville, IL
Kris is an hour late and damned Skype showed it to Betsy
Moments of our life are really important to you
Betsy pretends that she is me on Skype sometimes
The planets seemed to be aligned for our trip
The eBay pick-up guy got here right on time
Naperville was going to be hardest part with traffic
Driving Slowsky is like launching a boat
An hour and a half later w'ere making 8 miles of progress
The van is too tall for most drive thru awnings
Slowsky went to the dealer and got $1500 of repairs to travel worldwide
This is the point where you start adding up the costs
Gas doesn't count as vehicle maintenance
We finally make it to I-88
Slowsky is topping out at 70 mph with nothing more to give
First omen . . . we ignore it
We're gonna make it to Omaha
It wasn't a shifting issue but I am pushing Slowsky really hard
We get near DeKalb which is 50 miles from home and think about turning it around again
We push on
Betsy says "no" to my lead foot and thinks the 70 mph thing is good
Slowsky is sucking gas and needs refill at 180 mile mark, still in Illinois
Another omen
Kris starts venting that we should have flown at gas station number two
"I drove the Alaskan Highway and need a new car."
All the signs were there
It was our decision to keep moving on
Not true to Betsy's faith
Dinner at The World's Largest Truck Stop on I-80
Maybe it is safe because it's a tourist trap
Nope, it's a 3-D world of a sex offender registry
All just minor inconveniences at this point
Bleeding money out of my eye balls
10 years ago this would have been an adventure but with kids it is a nightmare
In Iowa they drive on the grass
Not a single room vacant
Pulling off on Omaha hoping for an empty hotel room
Scoring a room 20 miles north of downtown
10,000 lesbians converged on Omaha the same day as our vacation, of course

Coming up on Wednesday . . . Vacation: Act #2 Omaha to Denver

Today's show is with guests Amy Gahran and her husband Tom Vilot. We discuss conversations that relate to podcasting, art and other ways we comminucate and make connections. We also get into Tom's art work and a bit about FreeBSD.

The intro for today's show is really bad too. I skipped recording one today during the interview for some reason and won't do it again because today I had to record it on the go with a cheap mic and my skully covering it up for a windscreen.

Thanks Amy and Tom, again for taking some time out with me today.

Croncast - Jolie and her friend Kris Ep. 1 (remix)

My guest for today cancelled out early so I put together this special edition remix.

Today's show is a remix of the show from December 24, 2004 with Jolie Holland. I've mixed in some songs and done a little more production work that I should have done when I put the show together the first time.

This was a huge honor for me and something I have been looking forward to for the past month. If you've been following the show I am sure you understand.

Jolie talks a little on her past musical experiences, how she found my blog and why it was funny (she thought I was 70, true dat), what it is like to be on Anti Records, other stuff and my favorite . . . a possibly soon to be released live CD and maybe video of the session. For the rest of it you'll have to listen to the show.

My soundcard has a lot of extra noise that I didn't hear when recording the show. At one point I commited sin of messing with audio levels wjile recording . . . you'll know when!

This show was a lot of fun to record. Thanks again to my new friend Richie Carey who will be a frequent guest on the show, I hope.
