Polycom Communicator C100S a better tech purchase

With the Netgear Wifi phone number one on my "great concept horrible execution" list I was forced to take the appropriate action and return it to the store. Something that I rarely do. But instead of returning, I really needed a SkypeIn call solution, I exchanged it for the Polycom Communicator C100S.

It is a dedicated speakerphone just like Polycom makes for enterprise but a bit smaller, shaped likea pill and not a Nerf boomerang, a Skype button, a USB port and . . . I guess it is nothing like their enterprise products except for the impressive sound fidelity. I've never heard a Skype call as clear.

So far I have been really happy with it. It operated without flaw until I installed new drivers for a web cam. Once those drivers were on board it created a constant feedback loop. But the Polycom folks seemed to think of everything by adding a headphone jack. Which has saved the day but isn't much farther along than I was before with a headset and onboard mic.

Beck's Saturday Night Live performance video

I stumbled across an mpg version of Beck's Saturday Night Live gig right before the Thanksgiving. Before I could link up to it I thought that I would hit Beck's site . . . and sure enough the video from both performances was there for viewing. And . . . the mpg that I had seen was a screen capture from the site.

So instead of linking of to a lower quality version of an already low quality encoding of the video here are the directions:

a. go to www.beck.com
b. get your mouse to top left and drop down boom box and stop audio
c. go back left and get the menu to slide open
d. click the "video" button
d. click the "SNL Oct 2006" button
e. choose your speed

She went kaboom

Something happened. At least I noticed something happened. Croncast blew up in Internet Explorer with crazy JavaScript errors. Sorry for those of you using IE6 or 7.

I'm not sure when the problem began but it is fixed now thanks to Paul Wall. Turns out the problem was the Flash player that I had in all the pages. Who'd-a-thunk that the browser was actually parsing scripts that are in Flash?

I've got a stop-gap Flash player, that pretty thing above (ha!) from a previous client project. Maybe in a day or two I'll get it cleaned up for find another one.

Portable Media Expo audio released

Wanted to let those of you who were interested in my session from the Portable Media Expo a couple weeks ago that the audio from the Expo is now available. The audio is bundled so you can't get individual sessions (like mine) without picking up the entire set for $99.00 for now. GigaVox will be releasing some of them later . . . if my session makes the cut I'll let you know and point you to the podcast.

My recommendation is that if you are interested in podcasting this is a steal. And look at it this way, you didn't have to see the painted gals and you can hear all the good information that was shared.

Auralex foam thingies make it quieter

A few weeks ago I went into Sam Ash for a mic stand and left with some much needed Auralex acoustic studiofoam. I started a new podcast with some buddies and when I listened back to the audio I was less than impressed. I am used to hearing just Betsy and I and the room holds our voices well. Add 4 other dudes and myself and you have a cacophony riveling a Harley reving up in the belly of an ocean liner.Maybe it isn't that bad but to an audio nerd it was painful.

The kit I picked up was the Auralex D36-DST Roominators kit. Their factory gnomes can pack a lot of 12" x 12" foam pieces into a box. I finally installed the kit last night and it is pretty awsome. I can't say unbelievable becasue it is doing what it is supposed to do, remove "boomy" sounds, reflections and additional absorption.

The true test will be recording Monday's Croncast with the blocks in place.
