It took us a long time to get here

For over 3 years we worked hard to produce a show that we are proud of. In that time you have become friends with us even if we have never met face to face. I feel comfortable sharing with you.

Betsy and I are swamped right now with all the changes in our life. It has been a very hectic last few weeks. I leave tomorrow for a six day business trip. This trip has taken quite a bit of coordination and as I type this there is more that needs to be done.

For the next week to two weeks the shows will probably be sporadic. I will try to release a show on schedule during this time on MWF's. Some might be new and others will be best of clips that we have picked out.

Back to the beginning of this post. We don't want to lose your support and friendship. This is simply a tough time for us to get time to produce shows. Once the dust settles we'll be back on schedule. Plus, we'll have a couple weeks of show prep all built up.

Things do change

Inevitably, every time that I put show notes together the current day's show ends and iTunes flips randomly through previous episodes of Croncast. Always a good exercise in comparing the current show with one from the past. It's like podcast training . . . athletes do it.

After listening to any show from 2004-2006 I can't believe that was us. The shows are so much tighter now. I sound more relaxed.

I think it proves one thing . . . stick to something long enough and you are bound to get better at it. Thanks to all the listeners who've given us their time over the last nearly three years. Many better shows to come!

Forget the iPhone, The Flaming Lips iTunes original is boss

Who needs an iPhone when you've got great music and commentary? Apple released, or the record company did, an iTunes Original for The Flaming Lips.

I fell in love with their music when At War With the Mystics came out and have been earnestly combing through their catalog on iTunes. The early stuff is great but doesn't have the same vibe that Mystics has.

The track I'll be jamming on for the 4th and the next few days is a noisy version of Free Radicals.

Today's show is fighting me

Hey guys, something technical happened to today's show while we were recording last night. For some reason my side of the conversation is extremely low in some places it clips out (pops). Sure Betsy is loud but dang, computer takes me for a sucker. So it is taking me some time to put it together so that it matches Betsy's track. Kris is baffled because I didn't mess with the equipment, not even a knob.

Anyway, the show will be up soon.

Comcast plus Showtime equals This American Life before premiere

For those of you who are big This American Life fans and want to see the Showtime television premiere before 10:30 p.m. EDT and you happen to have Comcast OnDemand then take off work early or fire it up when you get home and watch it right now. Or if you have some headphones watch some clips in your cube.

Showtime has been running the premiere show for the last two weeks . . . maybe longer. Which is typical for Showtime and something that I frequently find myself using. As a Showtime customer and a nerd it makes me put them on a special pedestal amongst traditional media . . . they get to hang in the "we get it" posse.

What did I think? What did Betsy think? I'll share after the airing tonight just in case you want to remain unbiased.

Like we mentioned on Monday's show I am in Boulder for work and thought that we could crank out a show . . . silly Kris. I did get Betsy to record and what I have left from that recording is only my side of the conversation.

Maybe if I were Yul Brynner it would be more interesting. Things like, "Yes, I'm recording now," loose there magic when crossing the lips an ametuer ;-).

At this rate, it looks like we probably won't have a show for Friday either. I know. What do I do on a day without Ze? Whimper and stay in bed. You should do the same on Friday.

Skype phone

It has come to my attention after five hours of research and visiting retail stores (which would make my search about 8 hours) that the internet and retailers are slacking. The internet is resting on it's global ass scattering reviews to the winds and retailers seem to be basking in the orange glow of Vonage. That is except Fry's (my favorite place to nerd out) which seems to be basking in plastic rubbermaid bins full of returned open boxed VoIP handsets and Taiwanese trinket USB phones.

That brings me to the point of even writing this, imparting a bit of what I have learned so that the internet will seem less slovenly when you search for Skype phones.

There are a two varieties of Skype phones:

1) Computer needed to make calls
2) Computer not needed to make calls (which I would prefer)

And the rest shakes out from their like this:

Computer needed to make calls
1) USB
2) USB to wireless handset
3) USB dual mode (dual mode is code for connects to your regular phone line too)

Computer not needed to make calls
1) WiFi handsets
2) Ethernet (connects to your router via cable)
3) Dual mode with ethernet (think Cisco iPhone)

The best place to start your search for a Skype phone is Amazon. They have a pretty comprehensive selection and with user reviews from nerds and those less tech savvy who have used the gear.

After that hit Google and search for the phones you're interested in and pay attention to blog posts since most are personal reviews of the phone This phase of the research is where I was able to begin to narrow my choices based on my desire to not have to use my computer to make a call.

Right now I am interested in:
Netgear SPH101 - WiFi and has speakerphone capability
Belkin WiFi - WiFi
Polycom C100S USB
Philips VoIP841 (not for sale yet)

Once I make up my mind I'll do a review.

Betsy rouses me from the basement with the work "Fire"
Stay in the basement because it's safe even though there is a fire
The Goodwill grill is now in full flame burning off all the grease from the trap
The charred chunky collector flaming and the top are ball of flames and black smoke
Kris asks for the baking soda
I asked for fire extinguisher right now . . . Betsy threw it out
Betsy says it didn't look good and didn't match
Any fire extinguisher is better than none
Betsy hands me the Morton Salt instead of the Trader Joe's sea salt grinder
Saved by neighbor Jack and his fire extinguisher
As soon as hose melts to tank I am going to die in an explosion
With 911 on call waiting my mother-in-law clicks over to Vicky
He saved our house . . . he saved Croncast
Betsy finally finds our extinguisher in the garage
Finally doused it in water to cool it down to turn off the gas
The grill cleaned up ok but I don't think we'll ever use it again
Then Kris was swarmed by bees
It will go straight to my brain

If I had saved other family I still would be filling out reports and my family would have died

Brotherhood's heart beginning to beat

Brotherhood, an original series from Showtime has finally started to come to life after 4 episodes. It is too bad that it took this long. If it weren't for OnDemand I wouldn't have recorded them or even cared after the second episode.

Why? The cinematography is a slipshod style with wide angles (that finally work) and color blown out of most shots for a gritty feel. The story is slowly progressing but like all new shows the introduction of characters seemed forced and predictable. Not a recipe for entertainment success.

But that wasn't it. My real problem with the show was and still is editing. The replaying of multiple shots, rough cuts and the worst, from this audio guys humble opinion, is the sound design. Background and meaningless sounds are brought to the front of the audio mix and they seem out of place. How about a deck of cards being shuffled cranked up so high that it sounds like someone eating an ice cream cone at warp speed.

At episode 4 things are coming together. The photography is meshing with the story, the reuse of shots seems to have stopped and the characters are a little less predictable than before. If you haven't seen Brotherhood I do recommend it as a good study of, "What would I do in that situation?".

BTW, I did figure out why the sound design in some of these episodes is off . . . at the end of episode 3 there is a great sequence for a Nine Inch Nails song that is total rock star video. And, amazingly, it fits with the story. I'm thinking they blew the audio budget getting the rights to the song and the audio engineer is some guy's 8 year old kid.

NEW Croncast website

"My eyes, my eyes . . . it's so bright." We look at it this way, could it be any fresher? I think we are only missing the lemony scent. Complete site redesign created while listening to "At War With the Mystics" by The Flaming Lips.

This is the new home to Croncast! A little brighter and a whole lot more powerful. The new site is powered by the CastLock engine that I created for the ID3 project. Using this new code base instead of WordPress I am more readily able to expand the site in the future to offer many good things.

So where's all the old stuff? It's coming over slowly. I wanted to get this new version up so that the RSS feeds would kick in and replace the ones that have been causing trouble for people over the last two months. The old ones were so screwed up that it didn't make any sense to spend the time editing them when I could modify the code from another project that offers more choices.
