They're heavy as hell to lift from the bailer, the machine that scrapes up the hay from the field, and only those with the patience to wear long sleeves, jeans and gloves in 90 degree heat are allowed the privilege of participating while they are fresh.

Google Reader's Bundle feature has more similarities to this analogy than I would care to admit. And, yes, when I demoed it I made sure to put on a flannel shirt, Lee jeans and some mittens - the closest thing I now own to leather workman's gloves.

So, here's what I've got for you - there's plenty of room for improvement.

People don't want whole feeds combined to make one massive feed filled with content from the highest level filter that exists, publishers. Well, maybe they do if that is all that you offer. Granular access to content isn't the Holy Grail or what is next . . . it is simply how it should be.

And besides, there have been utilities to combine feeds like this for years. Do you know any of these product names beyond Yahoo Pipes? Remembering Pipes is easy because the last time you used it you told yourself you would never do it again.

A Google Reader Bundle has a web page and a feed . . . an Atom feed, not an RSS feed. Enough said here, it needs a RSS feed. The Atom feed itself is missing critical meta data like title, description, pub date, source, feed item origin, publisher, etc.

As a publisher, my concerns about this initial release of the bundle feature are the missing RSS feed and the lack of associated meta data for the content that makes the bundle. Which begs the next question of what metric is available to know how much additional syndication my content is getting once it has entered the Google Reader Bundle ecosystem? Currently there isn't one that is publicly available and I would venture to say that not for a very long time, if ever, there will be one offered.

With some more work Google can bring new features and hopefully a full set of tools that users and publishers can both use. But in this current state it is still in an insular silo of Google user nerdom. Yes, it still is a walled garden of content, of sharing and privileged consumption. It is a bale of hay.

the banner has the names of every soldier killed to date in the current iraq war. the stunning part is that the names are written very small.

it had a great impact. people were commenting about how big the banner was.

no one clapped when this one went by.

i got choked up and am again typing this up.

What is missing from the RSS feed the ability to load comments with a photo and choose how many items are returned in the feed. The API, however, will let you load hundreds of images and load comments for each photo.

There is a catch though. The API is broken up into about a 75 different calls. Not one single call to the server can match the data that is returned in the RSS feed. To get the same data I need to make approximately 8 different calls to Flickr. Not good.

What use is the API?

It gives me the ability to create a historical back up of my photos in their most basic form with urls, date, descriptions (with html stripped) and tags. It also gives someone building an application a rich data source to do some of the things that Flickr isn't already doing - the purpose of an API.

After working with it for a few hours I became frustrated. PHP is my poison of choice and the PHP examples that Flickr uses all return serialized data. Which is great and easy to work with if you already know what the XML namespaces are but without them it is hard to access the data. And in some cases impossible without printing out the serialized array and looking at it because the returned serialized array's keys don't match the XML namespaces. Not to mention children are buried in deeper arrays that aren't as easy to access as say $title = $item->photo['title'].

Here's how I cleaned up the mess. If you are PHP guru then I am sure you could get this down to one script.

An 'include' script, sort of. View this script by URL on your server to see all name spaces:

1) Create a new PHP file declaring xml as file type - header("Content-Type: text/xml")
2) Use the url that Flickr supplies to return content in REST format
3) Comment out the line for serialization
4) Use PHP's file_get_contents() function
5) echo the returned XML



A loader script:

1) Create a loader script
2) Call the include script - $resp = simplexml_load_file("YOUR INCLUDE SCRIPT URL");
3) Get the data out by name space, the same ones that Flickr documents



To view the name spaces that you will want to access simply open up the include script by url in your browser.

For now I will stick with the RSS 2.0 feeds for blog submissions but once I have some free time I will be using the API code above to create a cached archive for my own safe keeping.

I am sure that I am not the only Portable media Expo attendee who has put more energy into ego searches on Flickr for their mug than bathing or shaving. Well, maybe it's just me then but I've found my chicken skinned head a few times. Thankfully no place in vicinity of those painted gals.

Anyway I found this one earlier today with the headline, "Dinner with Visionaries - 2006". Thanks Scott! But my only vision was the one of David cutting his ear while shaving his head. Since I'm in the bald posse it carries extra relevance and terror.

My Vacation Sucked Too!

We know that you have gone on a vacation or two that have turned out to suck. And in many cases sucked worse than the one that we just shared in three separate acts. That is why we are having another contest!

To enter all you have to do is tell Betsy and me about it. Then after one week of submissions ending at 11:59 p.m. on Friday June 23, 2006 we will pick a winner for the Black 30gb iPod. Send your submissions to vacation@croncast.com.

We will read the submissions throughout the week on the show, part of the deal is that you are giving us persmission to read them so if you need to change some names do it before you send it, and we'll pick the winner. Laughs are the key winning.

There are only two rules in this one:

1) Don't make us cry.
2) Don't tell us anything that will have to be reported to the feds.

We will announce the winner during the podcast on Monday June 26, 2006.

My Vacation Sucked Too!

We know that you have gone on a vacation or two that have turned out to suck. And in many cases sucked worse than the one that we just shared in three separate acts. That is why we are having another contest!

To enter all you have to do is tell Betsy and me about it. Then after one week of submissions ending at 11:59 p.m. on Friday June 23, 2006 we will pick a winner for the Black 30gb iPod. Send your submissions to vacation@croncast.com.

We will read the submissions throughout the week on the show, part of the deal is that you are giving us persmission to read them so if you need to change some names do it before you send it, and we'll pick the winner. Laughs are the key winning.

There are only two rules in this one:

1) Don't make us cry.
2) Don't tell us anything that will have to be reported to the feds.

We will announce the winner during the podcast on Monday June 26, 2006.

Good luck and don't hold back. You know that you want to share. And secretly you know that you want Betsy to make fun of you too.

We recorded early in the morning because it is Betsy's Mom's birthday today and they were going to do nothing else but . . . go to garage sales and Goodwill. I think Goodwill needs to start kicking in a little sumthin sumthin for all the play we give them. Maybe not always positive on my behalf but atleast we can spell it right.

We discuss why Betsy enjoys conservative radio; well not enjoys it but gets fired up, sermon radio for neighbor humpers, the reference section in the Bible, miracle water on Comedy Central, Benny Hinn, the contest entries, Elliot peeing in the garbage can a few nights ago, bottom swatting.

Betsy feels like a total loser! She invited a mommy to her church the first time she talked to her. She feels really bad like she's an evangelist for the Universalist Unitarians. She really does. She called me once it happened and it was really funny for me.

We also talk about the "no sperm from gay men ban" by the FDA and the demotion of Army Reserve Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski to Colonel thanks to a military judge not hanging Lynndie England out to dry for the Abu Ghraib business, Kris's asymmetrical bald spots on his head "looks like you flew headlong into flypaper and tore yourself loose", what Betsy has learned from Drag Queens, the epilady spring loaded hair ripper outer and how Betsy got revenge in 6th grade against all the other girls who picked on her.

Kris rips into Bill Gates over the Microsoft campaign to outsource more jobs. Stop saying that the people don't have the skills here in the states and simply admit the fact that it is economic. My solution is for Microsoft, Dell, Cisco, Novell and any other tech company to open their own schools here in the states to teach people to fill these positions. Why shouldn't they? Cherry pick them at at early age and bring them up, open training online or face2face for people who can fill the other positions.

I'm just sick of this shit where these companies use this pretext that there are no people in this country to fill these jobs, bullshit. Quit lying and tell the truth.
