10/03/2007	Betsy and Kris do a wonderful job of airing out their lives on the air in a way that is real, funny, and sometimes even JUST A Little bit uncomfortable. Their lucky they got all that expensive equipment between them while their doing the show. In the future I see bullet proof glass..... LOL Just kidding. The show length is perfect, spot on, no waste on predetermined montages or business or reader mail or anything that's just filler to try and get a longer show. about 30 minutes or less is PERFECT. They're both Hilarious (a little respect for the Bear).

I haven't monkeyed around enough to get the episodes to download to my pc automatically so I can move them to my phone's memory card. I think that's what RSS is for, but I haven't had the time to mess around with it to figure it out. Born to podcast and new mediaize

I was looking around kristophersmith.com, my other blog, and found my first blog post "Soo . . . this is Wordpress?"

"I am very interested in the ability to add my own audio blogs also."

That post was about 6 months ahead of the beginning of podcasting. And when I thought it was cool to write like a robot.

I didn't know that podcasting was in the works, but when a colleague introduced me to it in October 2004, it was time to get it on.

Zuner or later

Well, the new Zune Marketplace launched yesterday. For now I will hold my opinions to myself as I see the project mature a bit.

I'm excited about the podcast section of the software, since it is Windows based and comes from Microsoft. Both things mean a new reach for podcasting.

However, when I went into the store, Croncast is not in their directory. So for now, no links to Zune Marketplace. I will add some and sing some praises, maybe, when we are added to the store.

If you get a chance to use the software, go to the podcast marketplace and "suggest a podcast". Namely, Croncast with this link http://www.croncast.com/shows.rss, but also add any others that you listen to and can't find by searching.

Marc Vandreessen's Hollywood vision

Marc Vandreessen put up an excellent post today, Rebuilding Hollywood in Silicon Valley's image, about the current writers' strike in Hollywood and the impact that it could have on the industry and their business models.

"The writers' strike, and the studios' response to the strike, may radically accelerate a structural shift in the media industry -- a shift of power from studios and conglomerates towards creators and talent."

Recommended reading for anyone producing media. Yeah, you too non-Hollywood basement producer this impacts you.

I had a conversation with Tim Street late last week where he pointed out many of things that Marc hit on. Obviously, Tim's perspective is less Valley oriented but since he is a producer, but the sentiment is the same. It is is time for the creatives to take control of their work and distribute it online themselves.

The time seems to be right for this to come together. It sort of feels like podcasting did in 2004 when the stars aligned.

Time to plug myself like I have no shame!

Thus, in the true spirit of being shameless, I will create this unabashed self-promoting bit of text to tell you about the Kris Smith that many of you don't know.

Planet earth had just escaped the Y2k bug so we bought our first computer since they didn't destroy the world they must be okay. So in early 2000 I taught myself how to use Wavelab to edit audio and later that same year I took my first programming class to learn HTML. The rest is history, as they say in the biz.

In the last seven years, I've accomplished more things in digital media and web development than I could have ever anticipated:

Stepping out of Room 214 into the hallway

In January of this year I took the position, VP, New Media with Room 214, an internet and search engine marketing company. I brought with me Castlock, the podcasting and rss metrics platform that I developed in early 2006.

This was an exciting opportunity. I had built a solid relationship with the founders of the company over the previous year working closely with them to produce podcasting and new media campaigns for the Alltel Racing podcast (NASCAR driver Ryan Newman), four podcasts for NFL Pro Bowl players during 2006 season and many other client podcasts; all the while holding a position as Associate Director, e-Learning for another company. Many of you might remember us talking about this last January.

The last ten months working for Room 214 have been great, but the time has come for all of us to move on.

What will I do now?

I'm not sure. But I do have quite a few options . . . probably more than I realize. There are a couple that leading the pack right now.

My first option is to make sure my resume is up to the task of assisting me gain new full-time employment. It is pretty amazing how over the last three years podcasting and rss have transitioned to "new media" and are being welcomed into the corporate structure. All that bickering about every company being a media company seems to be coming true!

My second option is to put more energy into my podcast production company, Palegroove Studios, and get back in the saddle for podcast production, consulting and licensing of Castlock. When I started with Room 214 I put it on the back burner since I was doing the same work as my "day job".

My third option, and least viable as a solution, is to go all out Croncast. I would love nothing more than to be doing the show full time and bring video into the mix but this doesn't seem to be the right time.

That's it, that is what's been up around here.

Like any time of transition this is an interesting and exciting time. I am already wondering which path I will end up going down and where the choice(s) that I make will lead my family next.

Things do change

Inevitably, every time that I put show notes together the current day's show ends and iTunes flips randomly through previous episodes of Croncast. Always a good exercise in comparing the current show with one from the past. It's like podcast training . . . athletes do it.

After listening to any show from 2004-2006 I can't believe that was us. The shows are so much tighter now. I sound more relaxed.

I think it proves one thing . . . stick to something long enough and you are bound to get better at it. Thanks to all the listeners who've given us their time over the last nearly three years. Many better shows to come!

Wired geekipedia 2007 on podcasting.

Just like fighting the law and the law won, this paragraph sums up the state of podcasting right now as seen from the outside.

How so?

iTunes logo for the visual representation of podcasting. Podcasting is now synonymous with Apple to those outside our industry. Which is a testament to the good work done by the Apple team.

Too bad Microsoft didn't show up earlier. They can still help but it's pretty late in the game.

The Microsoft goal should be to have next year's paragraph focus on their success from promoting indie podcasters that do have high production values, content and talent. It would be great to see an MS podcasting logo along side too. Make that goal number two. Good luck Zune team.

Personally, I will keep cranking out shows . . .

And so will my people.

Small biz guide to doing business with a Viacom company

I've been sitting on this for a while, nearly 8 months.

My most recent activity with a Viacom company and previous from 2 1/2 years ago were nearly identical, not good. I've talked with many people who've worked with Viacom companies about my experiences. Turns out, not that different than their's.

Ready for the answer . . . culture, culture, culture.

If you really want to do business with this leviathan here are some tips:

1) Notify your attorney that you are going to engage in talks with them
2) Before doing any work, proposals or exploratory meetings get an NDA in place (this will probably stop the machine cold - culture - suing them is out of question unless you won power ball, but nonetheless is good to have in place). If they want you and not your ideas they will move forward
3) If you make it this far start the contract process and be prepared to negotiate like the life of your company depended on it, they will.
4) Do not appear weak or unprepared, they will eat you alive.

Be glad you survived and invest that money in other business opportunities that take less effort and use that Viacom company's name to get you through the next door.

To my peeps inside the machine you know that I mean no disrespect.

Podcasting gets a plug from Eric Zorn

Eric Zorn has a good, succinct write up about podcasting in today's Trib, Pull up a chair, the plug in some podcasts. Well, at least the online version. As I sit in my room here in Boulder the only thing available to me is a paper printed on recycled hemp with biodegradable ink that is already fading. I kid the Boulder.

Anyway, in the blog version Eric did something else cool, he posted other podcasts that were recommended from people on his mailing list. We didn't make Eric's list but we did make Rick's. Thanks for the nod holmes.

With us in Rick's list and many of the others was the Wait Wait Don't Tell Me podcast. It is only correct that we showed up in front of this Chicago Public Radio staple in Rick's list. Why? As I will remind the the rest of planet earth with a connection to the tubes we are Peter Sagal's favorite podcasters. Heheheh. I have the photo to prove it. He wrote it on his own program from May 2005, no less.

If you happen to listen to the show from 2005 where we review the Wait Wait Don't Tell Me live show, just keep in mind it is from the olden days of podcasting back when tumbleweeds and buffaloes ruled the plains.

Since then we've put over 375 more shows under our belts and gotten much better at this thing. Tighter, as they say in the biz.

The following is a comment that I left for Dave Slusher regarding his podcast from yesterday lambasting me on "podcasting day job" from a presentation that I gave in 2006. It is waiting approval at his site, and in case it doesn't meet the specs I thought I would post it to the public here. I usually don't respond to this type of stuff but this deserves another perspective . . . like one from me, the guy in question. Thanks to the friend that pointed this out. He also rips Scoble, so I am in good company.

My comment:

Okay, where do I begin. Dave, you and I are not strangers. We know each other from podcasting and have spoken on more than one occasion. We've both been at this podcast thing for a long time, you since Aug '04 and me since Nov '04, we've both got some perspective.

I respect your thoughts on my presentation, but I don't agree with you.

The presentation in question, "Leveraging your knowledge as a successful podcasting consultant" from PME 2006 was based on sharing my experience working for clients to produce podcasts from my basement. It was to help give a framework to those who wanted to make some extra bucks. Shit, I even give out my own business template for pricing and structure to those who attended and to those still asking for it.

Success, for me has been doing what I love, audio production, writing code and using my creativity in projects that pay me. Would you have me buy the argument that only "real" creativity comes from the absence of greenbacks?

In February of 2005 I opened my consulting company and two weeks later I had MTV as a client. Was it also bad that in my presentation I shared how I lost them as a client? Maybe the fact that I recommend to podcasters that they should talk to a business attorney and an IP attorney so that they can avoid pitfalls like libel or onerous contracts?

In my life, I too am trying to save for retirement, college for the kids and a safety net. If I can make a buck podcasting for other people . . . big or small to put toward them by making podcasting my day job it doesn't feel like I am punching the clock. It might mean that I am working "just another shit job" in my basement. However, it doesn't feel like a shit job. It feels like I am doing something that I love. That should account for something in the personal satisfaction category, I rank this job a 1.

You and I simply differ on how to make money podcasting. You like the advertising/sponsorship model and I prefer to both produce my own personal podcast and use my skills to make works for other people. My personal podcast has been delivered 3 times a week for 2 1/2 years with my wife every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Want to question my passion for podcasting?

On this, I'm not asking to debate this topic but simply recommending that if anyone is interested to hear the presentation in question head over to http://pa.gigavox.com/ and look for big goatee and bald head for the right session.

The bottom line for me is this is what someone who enjoyed both of our sessions had to say about them:

Back, I'll let the public decide if I am an evil prick trying to destroy "podcasting" by taking corporate money to work a shitty day job doing what I love from the comfort of my own home or if I got lucky and found a way for myself to make a living for family and our futures doing what I love from the comfort of my home . . . at my day job.

If I had $5 million . . .

Update: It's a meme for sure. A commentary over at the WSJ online by Andy Kessler makes my idea sound less crazy.

I've been thinking about this since last Saturday when I read that the SF Chronicle would be cutting 25 percent of it's editorial staff in their newsroom. And with the conversation taking shape online I decided to stop procrastinating and write this.

On Tuesday of this week I was talking with Scott about podcasting quality and new media production when I went segued into, "If I had $5 million dollars . . ."

Here's what I would do with it:
1. I would pick up half of the Chronicle staffers that are being canned [around 40 people]
2. Spend a couple of weeks working with them to understand RSS, blogging, podcasting (audio/video), production software Mac/PC and anything else DIY media - don't get me wrong most of them probably understand this stuff but I would want them to be self-sufficient, decentralized producers (Mark is already getting this on)
3. Find out what they really like to do in life, what they like to report about and where they like to travel
4. Send them all off to report (blog and podcast) with the gear and skills they need to produce finished works, and a login to a central web based CMS. There is no big fancy office in this plan.
5. Distribute the work via blog, podcast, RSS and closed system for contract work
You might ask, at the core, how this is different from Reuters or other media organizations? It's not really that different. It's simply a model that uses the greatest distribution platform - the internet and maintains agility by avoiding bloat.

The way that it is really different is that a new crop of seasoned print news pros would show up on the scene with the ability to use the knowledge, interview skills and the contacts that they have gained in their tenure to produce work - news reporting, investigative, human interest . . . what have you, from their own perspective. I agree with Dave Winer on this, it is the next step.

So how do you keep it going? With a smaller, nimble, decentralized model like this I think you could get really creative with ways to generate revenue. The real nut comes from selling the content back to traditional media outlets as a buyout for rights or licensing it to them for a fee. Ad revenue should be viewed as beer money.

When I stood inside the building at 1211 Avenue of the Americas, a.k.a News Corp, I was told that the 10x10 room with equipment floor to ceiling and 5 people inside was the only room in the building that turned a profit. The room? Distribution by satellite for affiliates, rival networks and other buyers around the globe. One hundred square feet! Btw, have you seen how big this building is?

So, if I had $5 million I would look to these and other journalistic professionals as partners in building the next generation of media publishing. Sure, they are showing up after most of the heavy lifting has already been done and many of them spent an inordinate amount of time picking us apart, but we should welcome them to the party. We have just as much to learn from them as they do us.

I can't forget this . . . that is $5 million business money. Do you think that Betsy would let me near it if it was really mine? I mean hers.

I found this online this morning, something I said nearly two years ago about podcasting and the Adam and Ron Podshow "strategy cast", that seems to stand true today:
"The money for now[in podcasting] is in services and software with advertising lagging behind as podcasters have yet to produce the numbers and models that advertisers feel comfortable with. Podshow seems to prepared to build from the services and software base and then bring the advertisers in but in that time there will be other[s] who figure out how to make it work.

My take is that being a first mover is very important, especially in this space and the mistakes that will be made by Podshow will benefit everyone else who comes along after. We're all learning from one another, a community of individuals with the same interest sharing (even if for a price)."

PodCampNYC gets done

It's taken a day and a half of recovery but I'm ready for a quick post about PodCampNYC. I had a great time, met a ton of nice people and talked podcasting, RSS and mmRSS for a rock solid 12 hours.

If I was forced to make a decision about which of the PodCamps that I have attended my favorite would be this one. John C. Havens and his team of volunteers did an amazing job of organizing a very large scale event on a limited budget. For those of you not familiar with PodCamp these events are free to attend. They are called "unconferences" since the only thing that is the same is that you get to brand your event with the title PodCamp.

PodCamp is a ground up, grass roots type of deal that is put on by someone with a passion for the medium. And PodCampNYC was no different. For me, best one yet. I'll have a complete run down of why on my work blog, Capture the Conversation later today.

I'm on for New York April 5-8

We couldn't get it set up for Betsy and the kids to come . . . but I am still trying.

With or without the posse I'll be attending PodCamp NYC at The New Yorker Hotel on April 6-7. I'll be arriving late Thursday afternoon so that I can get my bearings before things begin on Friday night.

If you are in New York or really interested in podcasting you should check out this event. The best part is that it is free to attend.

Speaking today in Chicago

Thought I would throw in a post for today's fun! I'm speaking at eLearning 2007 here in Chicago later today. My presentation, "Using RSS Feeds, Podcasts to Deliver Distance Education" is focused on a case study of the first Castlock licensee. You can download the slides from my work blog.

So there was no real travel just a $40 parking tab from the hotel.

Which appears to mean $10 for every diamond that a hotel claims. Maybe someday I'll actually stay at a diamond rated hotel and test that theory.
