Tuesday night joy joy fizzles out

Hey guys, we tried to record last night and the borrowed equipment gave me more trouble than my nerd mind could figure out. I could only get one mic working at a time and then once it moved it too would stop working.

So Betsy and Jeanie have now left town for Valhalla to become junior survivalists or republicans (I haven't decided which) and will make it back on Thursday night. I'll have some other gear lined up to record with and we'll see what we can get recorded.

At best we'll have a show for Friday, and if not, look for Monday to be the next show.

My official and completely unscientific grass growing experiment

As most of you know, I am a lawn hater. I am a man allergic to lawnmowers and weed whackers.

After much ado around here about the lawn I have been forced to attempt to grow grass in some bare spots around the yard. Over the next few weeks I will be experimenting with a new area of the yard, posting photos and commenting on, well, watching grass grow.

The impetus for doing this unscientific lawn experiment is that about a month ago in separate barren ares in the yard I threw out two types of grass growing material - seeds and only seeds (Material #1) in one area and in the other some super fancy patch filling mulch, seed, fertilizer stuff (Material #2) - and one of the grass growing materials appeared to outperformed the other. I say "appeared" because after 3 weeks of watching Material #2 bleach in the sun and lose its pretty blue hue I threw grass seed all over it and by the end of the week I had patchy grass growth. I say it was the seeds and Betsy says that it was the magic of Material #2.

Of course, there are other reasons for the experiment like that I don't really care if I have two different shades, lengths or blade widths of grass next to one another, as some green grass nuts might.

So now I have a rather large area in my yard dedicated to watching the grass drag race to the sun it a fight for survival (it is my yard, it will die in future). I mean compare how Material #1 and Material #2 perform under the same conditions and with equal sunlight and water, as equal as an unscientific can be.

Here's the breakdown:

Material #1 - Scotts Turf Builder grass seed (the Spring Seeding Mix variety). It can be viewed on the left side (Patch A) of all photos.
Material #2 - Scotts PatchMaster Lawn Repair Mix (the Sun and Shade variety). It can be viewed on the right side (Patch B) of all photos.
Sunlight/shade
Water in the morning and evening for about 5 minutes
Rain
Random dog fertilizer (poo)

Greg from Viva Podast just sent me a link to a version of George Bush singing, well speaking, the lyrics to U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday. Someone worked pretty hard on this video.

The best part is to think of the speech writer, a bitter and sharp witted english major who actually wrote some of these phrases wholly into speaches. Or this writer lifted them to meet a deadline, but either way it funny and creepy.

Special Croncast with our friends Viva Podcast

The show is up a day late but absolutely worth it. I wanted to try something new and when Greg and I were talking a couple of weeks ago we thought this would be something that would interesting to try for both shows. And since the names together sound like something made from space-age material we thought it could be spectacular like David Copperfield.

This show is hopefully going to be something that we continue and mold into something that fits the show and our conversations.

We did a show with our friends Greg and Lisa of Viva Podcast! You can listen to Greg and Lisa at www.vivapodcast.com. Never have we done anything like this and thought it would be fun to hook up with our podcasting homies from New Mexico.

It is a podcast mashup of epic proportions . . . maybe.

The show turned out really well, however there are audio quality and sync issues on our end due to equipment flaking out. I worked for a long time to get it back to a level of quality that you would be able to palette.

Thanks also to Greg for putting together the awesome album art for this conjunctive event.

I don't want to give away what is so special but I can say that it is taking me much longer than expected to put the show together today. The show is more than Betsy and I as we get together with another podcasting couple and friends of the show. There I said it. Anyway, the show will be up sometime this evening.

The sound quality on our end is pretty poor do to an equipment malfunction or repeated equiment malfunction where the pitch of our voices went down a whole semitone. So be prepared.

Act I: (to steal from Ira Glass)

We interview two guests, NBC5 reporter Charlie Wojciechowski and cameraman/lapel mic wizard Vince Munion. Like Betsy and I these two have worked together for years. Charlie and Vince's audio is a bit quite because they were sharing a mic.

We discuss the new NBC5 podcast(s) "Weekend Web Guys", Vince busts us out about Legos on the studio floor, their work together in the Quad Cities, Charlie also explains a really cool thing NBC5 will be doing during Wimbledon to get their news casts out like . . . stream them, Vince's BTK connection, Charlie's father's prophetic words; "Charlie you are going to end up working someplace like Fargo, North Dakota", how they both ended up in Chicago, legalized big media and in the future Vince promised share his story about growing up in the town that brought the world purple ketchup

Act II:

The show no one was ever supposed to hear, the show we recorded during the taping of some b-roll. It is unedited so that you can get a sense of what it was like in the basement for this interview. You have probably heard a couple of these pieces before but they have renewed freshness.

The interview should air on NBC5 this Friday. What time? I have no idea I need to make some phone calls.

If anyone in the Chicago area can tape this for us I would really appreciate it because we are supposed to be out of town for Elliot's birthday.
