i told you folks the honest truth on the show that a bag of quickcrete, used tire, top 10 feet of a TV antanae and a Wal-Mart basketball hoop were my gravel driveway pride.

this remnant stands as a testament to this story. i had forgotten that we had written our names in it. check out that sweet "Kyle".

the crowd got hushed quite a bit when they saw this banner coming down the street when they realized what it was.

the banner has the names of every soldier killed to date in the current iraq war. the stunning part is that the names are written very small.

it had a great impact. people were commenting about how big the banner was.

no one clapped when this one went by.

i got choked up and am again typing this up.

What good are 3 hits from Google search results?

I can tell you. It all depends on what people are searching for.

Painfully obvious, right?

Well, not so much when someone searches at Google for intitle:"chocolate" ext:rss. The odds are astronomically high that even chocolate experts weren't even returned as results. See for yourself.

So what does this mean? It means that someone searched Google for a RSS feed (ext:rss) with the word chocolate in the title (intitle:"chocolate").

Yes, the search is more advanced than a keyword or phrase based search but that isn't my full point. The reason that it matters is that not only did this individual search for chocolate but also culture and abba. Not quite sure what it says about the person searching for those topics . . .

So for me, these three hits matter. They are three more than I would have normally received for those topics and a chance for me to get them to possibly subscribe to those feeds, subscribe to my podcast, click an ad (yes, I like money) or get my brand in front of them.

I am able to do this with keyword feeds that I create dynamically from posts that get the same SEO treatment that a normal webpage would get.

The other plus for this type of search is the fact that they return so few results and Croncast happens to be ranked #1 for most of them including searches like, say . . . "CNN" or "Micorsoft" or "iTunes".

I've had conversations with a friend, Rick Klau, about RSS feeds being indexed in Google search results. Most of those discussions focused on my saying that feeds should show up in search results and Rick saying that they shouldn't.

My stance is that some people, like myself, benefit from these results the same way that we benefit from a normal click through to our sites. I am able to do this by checking where the individual who clicked through is coming from and displaying a web page instead of the RSS with the exact same data that was in the feed.

But I don't stop there. I also make sure to let the user know how they got to the page and that they can now subscribe to that feed. It's a soft landing for what traditionally has been a hard look at XML or ugly feed displays in browsers. Which is where you will end up with 99.9 out of 100 feeds if you click through them when returned in a search.

What is Rick's position? If 99.9 are bad then they should be removed. For the time being I will agree that he is right. But that doesn't mean that this is the way it always has to be.

A couple of things could change this:

1) The uptake of RSS since IE7 and and FireFox now display their own XSLT to prettify the XML. Sort of like FeedBurner does.
2) Publishers add their own XSLT for their feeds
3) Publishers using blogs, most of which are dynamically generated, are written with code that can check for referers like Goolge, Live and Yahoo and redirect the user to a page that has the same content as the feed
4) My favorite. Google could create their own XSLT document that loads the feed into it.

Maybe that was more than a couple but I believe there are a lot of ways to welcome feeds into indexed search results beyond having to type in a search like intitle:"Google" ext:rss.

By the way, I'm not number one on this one Google is with it's YouTube property.

Next up, how to create RSS feeds with keywords in the title, how to get the .rss extension added to your feeds and landing pages for feeds.

New photo feed

Well, it really is an old feed that I used for another project but thought I could spice it up a bit. It's a photo feed from flickr but I've rewritten it load the middle size image as opposed to the thumbnail and changed the enclosure from the middle size photo to the large size for a hefty payload.

Uno, dos y tres!

We've been doing it up for three years as of today! A library of four hundred and thirty shows since November 8th, 2004.

What is there to say? More, obviously!

We want to say thanks to everyone who listens to the show and to those that have listened in the past. Thank you for allowing us, in absentia, to make you laugh.

Also, thank you for sharing the show with your family, friends and strangers by playing it for them, the blog posts, commenting on our site and the reviews that you have written.

Six months from now we should hit the 500 episode mark. Then it will be time to party!

This Veramyst thing has my attention

I think I need to be schooled in what makes good medicine, public legal policy and approval by the FDA for prescriptive medicines.

After last night's post about the Veramyst commercial, this gem shot from it:

and the comment from a knowledgeable scientist, Geeka, I just need to know how this stuff works.

I don't want to know about the drug alone. That would be nice. But I also want to know how the FDA approves something that even the scientists that made the concoction can't figure out.

Does that mean that it is magic? Could it be considered a potion?

Seriously, is it simply good enough to say to someone . . . spray this up your nose and your allergies will stop? What happens when someone uses it and their eyeballs fall out?

Maybe it is covered by strong legalese like this:

"The way VERAMYST works is not entirely understood." - TV commercial

"However, the precise mechanism through which Veramyst affects allergy symptoms is not known." - Medical News Today (reads like a press release)

Both of these lines must have been written by GlaxoSmithKline's new counsel, Roberto Gonzales.

Saturday code goodness means flickr, flafoo and twitter

So far I've got a new flickr + twitter script done and need to move on to flafoo while I have some daylight to burn.

The flickr + twitter code is why all of the pics have been showing up as posts and why all the people following me on twitter got blasted with 20 messages at once . . . sorry for that. I promptly setup a twitter account to test with.

For the last two months I have been sending photos from my phone to flickr and having them inserted as blog posts. Which has been pretty awesome and a ton of fun. But what I was missing was the twitter connection. Not anymore.

Now, thanks to this post from Dave Winer and code that I had already written for @tweetair (coming very soon, I swear), flafoo and Croncast, it took about ten minutes to get it up and running.

Dave's post was important because it turned the light for me. The "Ahaa" moment was when I realized I was already parsing my flickr feed every two minutes anyway looking for photos that I had marked to be blog posts. All I needed to do was differentiate what was to be a blog post from that of a twitter update.

It took about two seconds.

I make blog posts from flickr by starting a description of a photo with an asterisk, like so "*", and adding my content after that. For twitter I use "^" to tell the script to send a tweet. If I use them together "*^" then I get both.

Dave's setup with TwitterGram is much cleaner, using only the tag portion to note that a flickr upload is meant to be a tweet, simple and clean. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to tweet their flickr photos with ease. My code is custom and considerably more messy for a guy that wants to have control over blog posts, blog posts and tweets or just tweets by uploading photos to flickr.

API's + the RSS 2.0 + curl + simplexml_load_file = ridiculously low threshold for a mediocre coder to join the integration party.

Speaking of API's, I will be updating flafoo today and possibly tomorrow with new categories that will henceforth be known as "flafoogeries" and the ability for anyone to add a "flafoogery" from the site.

Now that Betsy is big time with her Christian Science Monitor interview about Elmo TMX's on ResaleQueen.com out I will prepare for her eventual Rosanne launch to fame. Heh! I kid baby, I kid.

The title of the piece is, "10 years later, a new ticklish Elmo tops the 'hot toy' list" written by Cristian Lupsa. Thanks to Christian for writing what is pretty much a quintessential Betsy piece.

Betsy and I have been joking for the last hour about how when her jokes are out of context or by not having a personal relationship with her how her humor comes off. We'll let you know what kind of feedback, if any we receive from anyone new.

300 by 300th Update Uno

From the tally on the homepage you can see that things are going pretty well for the 300 by 300th listener drive and contest. We're at day 10 with 40 new listeners signed up and using their RSS feeds to download shows.

I need to put the finishing touches on the "Handle Moxie" page and should have that done in the next few days. The "Moxie" page will list those with Handles and the amount of entries they have collected by having new listeners enter it when they register.

All right then, the good stuff. Thanks to everyone who has signed up as a new listener or registered for a Handle! So what can I say about this so far? The emails and posts to sites and blogs describing the show have been really great. The most flattering part by far is that they were even written in the first place and second is that they spell my name right, with a "k".

What else is cool? Significant others who listen getting a Handle and then having their companion sign up as a new listener. That is cool Sharing with those closest to you and getting another entry is a good thing. I am sure some more interesting trends will show up but for now that is all that I have noticed.

How do you enter? Well . . .

1) Fill out the right form for you - *New* Listener or Get a Handle (current listener)
2) Verify your email address (Activates and qualifies those with a "Handle")
3) *New* listeners get activated and qualified by using their special RSS feed
4) 300th new listener and the person whose Handle they use win iPods AND
5) A drawing for 2 more iPods from everyone who entered!
