Hiatus coming to a close back on Monday
5 comments      Added on March 30, 2007 by Kris
Well, hello there. It's time for us to step out of our pre-spring slumber and get back with you.

In true Croncast fashion we'll be back to begin a new set of shows every Monday, Wednesday and Friday like the old days one month ago. Come Monday, things will look a little bit different around here for those of you who visit the site . . . there will be some additional features like new RSS feeds (for those of you who don't visit), a reviews section and full archives section.

Betsy and I both look forward sharing some of the show prep that we have been living the last four weeks. I will make sure to smell good for you and Betsy might even wear make-up.

I'm on for New York April 5-8
2 comments      Added on March 28, 2007 by Kris
We couldn't get it set up for Betsy and the kids to come . . . but I am still trying.

With or without the posse I'll be attending PodCamp NYC at The New Yorker Hotel on April 6-7. I'll be arriving late Thursday afternoon so that I can get my bearings before things begin on Friday night.

If you are in New York or really interested in podcasting you should check out this event. The best part is that it is free to attend.

Life is show prep when you own a Volvo, I mean a Ford
1 comments      Added on March 27, 2007 by Kris
Sooooo, Kris thought to himself . . . I mean myself, that I would be cool and do something nice for Betsy. Like I could stop by Volvo of Lisle, the new temporary home for her car and talk to them about the state of her V70 wagon and give her some good news like it has been fixed or that we guarantee that 3/4 of an inch of water will never pour out from under the dash on the driver's side again.

I suppose I should have been talking to the techs instead of a finance guy, a manager and a sales man to get an answer for that. But I knew the car wouldn't be finished since we didn't hear back plus the fact that when we arrived they told us that they were overbooked by 60 appointments for today.

Mosquito eggs will be hatching in the meantime. This may be the most expensive larva nest/ant farm in history. Hopefully the high water mark won't damage the resale value. Something Betsy knows all about.

This was the point tonight they would step up to the plate and work with us. However, that would be to easy! I was told to call customer service, "It might take two weeks but eventually you'll talk to the right person."

Like I have time for this, not only do you have my car but I want to spend hours on hold waiting for someone to tell me that they can't help us out and I have to get upset and ask for a manager. At that point they then tell us that they don't really work for Volvo of North America they are just at a call center in Idaho.

This was, of course was after he mentioned that I might want to pursue the lemon law. I promptly redirected that path of reasoning as a remedy for a car that has been in for repair SIX times in 5200 miles of its existence. Towed in for two of those repair trips. We both know the lemon law means a bunch of expenses on my end and a high likely hood that there will be a pretty unsatisfactory ending to the story of our Ford station wagon.

Well, I gotta run laptop needs juice and I am tired. More to come later this week but expect a recap on our first show back this Monday April 2nd.

Oh yeah, "Is there anyone that I can call to shorten this process?" says Kris. "No. Just call customer care," Mr. Sales. "You guys don't have a name?" asks Kris. "I don't work with them," Mr. Sales.

You would think we bought the car from Volvo of North America.

Speaking today in Chicago

Thought I would throw in a post for today's fun! I'm speaking at eLearning 2007 here in Chicago later today. My presentation, "Using RSS Feeds, Podcasts to Deliver Distance Education" is focused on a case study of the first Castlock licensee. You can download the slides from my work blog.

So there was no real travel just a $40 parking tab from the hotel.

Which appears to mean $10 for every diamond that a hotel claims. Maybe someday I'll actually stay at a diamond rated hotel and test that theory.

Podcasting's 13th Anniversary?
0 comments      Added on March 23, 2007 by Kris
Crack research and a journalism degree can help you too when you need to write an article for your local paper:
"Podcasting, which was developed by Apple in 1994, stands for iPod and broadcasting."
This must have been the real first generation iPod the size of a backpack with swappable floppy's for memory and 10 second podcasts in aif format.

I don't really mean to pick on Ms. Carey, well, maybe a little. I would also think that the Editor also deserves some razzing.

What this article and eventual syndication to a sister Texas newspaper under the same ownership of Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc.(CNHI) highlights is that your tiny corner of the world isn't so tiny anymore. Especially, when it is brought to my attention by a Google alert for subjects I am interested in, like podcasting. Yes, your intended audience maybe local but that doesn't mean the 5000 people in your community are the only ones listening.

Publishing + Syndication + Internet + Filters = One very large conversation.

Maybe someone at CNHI should read the The State of the News Media Report 2007. Pay special attention to the section titled "Newspapers".

We're on for Seattle and Gnomedex
5 comments      Added on March 22, 2007 by Kris
Pacific Northwest listeners get ready, we're coming out to see you. I'm coming for Gnomedex in Seattle to nerd out August 9th - 11th. Betsy and the kids will be coming out with me so we will probably be in town a few days before or after the conference.

We'd love to meet up with any of you who can make it in to Seattle.

Maybe there is a bar, apartment or house that would like to have a live Croncast and friends gathering in it? If you have any ideas let us know.

Comcast plus Showtime equals This American Life before premiere
0 comments      Added on March 22, 2007 by Kris
For those of you who are big This American Life fans and want to see the Showtime television premiere before 10:30 p.m. EDT and you happen to have Comcast OnDemand then take off work early or fire it up when you get home and watch it right now. Or if you have some headphones watch some clips in your cube.

Showtime has been running the premiere show for the last two weeks . . . maybe longer. Which is typical for Showtime and something that I frequently find myself using. As a Showtime customer and a nerd it makes me put them on a special pedestal amongst traditional media . . . they get to hang in the "we get it" posse.

What did I think? What did Betsy think? I'll share after the airing tonight just in case you want to remain unbiased.

Atlanta is a hockey town?
5 comments      Added on March 17, 2007 by Kris
Big thanks to Mark for hooking me up with the first pro hockey game that I have been to in years . . . great seats and an overtime win for the home team and the behind the scenes tour at CNN.

I am still a little freaked out that Atlanta has this many hockey fans. It was 70 degrees here two days ago.

Staying awake en route to PodCamp Atlanta
0 comments      Added on March 16, 2007 by Kris
It's a travel morning . . . 4:45 a.m. and I'm fighting to stay awake on my way to the airport. What a better way than to try to post from a cell phone in the back seat?

I'm heading to Atlanta for PodCamp today and tomorrow. Oh, all the nerding out I'm going to do.

Atlanta listeners for those of you who do not fear nerds and have some free time come on out to the event and hangout.

Update: If anyone does want to meet up give me a call (630) 303-9065.

Some awesomeness of Ira Glass
0 comments      Added on March 12, 2007 by Kris

Chas Bowie has posted a great interview with the accomplished Ira Glass of This American Life, currently the most popular podcast on iTunes. This isn't the typical interview as a biography, but more a sharing of what it takes to create compelling and meaningful works . . . concepts to build your own creative story telling with.

Thanks go out to Erik for pointing me to these.
