FedEx no match for the internet and a German
0 comments      Added on August 31, 2006 by Kris

It turns out that in cases of needing to deliver most physical goods a shipping company like FedEx is the right choice. Try shipping tube socks to Timmy at camp through your hard drive or uploading a lobster to a server for download later.

The story that motivated this post came through a DVD email list that I belong to and goes like this:

1) FedEx loses a DVD needed for a presentation in Munich
2) DVD author posts to the list looking for someone in Munich to burn another DVD for him
3) The next morning a nice German citizen on the list downloads stuff to burn to DVD and hand delivers it at a conference

FedEx -1, internet +1.

Wouldn't it be great though if FedEx offered a service like this? Minus having to send out an email but a socially networked digital delivery company. Maybe the model could allow for members of the network, a niche let's say, to share in the profit of the delivery charges . . . wait this is a bad idea.

Kris -1, internet now is +2.

Ricky Gervais notches another podcasting first

I thought it was post worthy to point out that Ricky Gervais has his podcast featured on the front page of iTunes Music store . . . not the podcast category. A big first for podcasting even if you have to pay for his podcasts to hear them.

Thanks to Bernadette for her review of the show at Podcast Fanatic.

If you are looking to find some new podcasts to put into the rotation Bernadette gives her two cents on some others too.

Croncast is now coComment enabled

Jumping in with both feet isn't usually my MO when it comes to third-party software integration into my one of my babies. But today I took a leap and added coComment.

I have heard so much about it over the last two weeks that I thought it was time to go and take a look. The concept is brilliant.

coComment allows a registered user to track a "conversation" that they are having online through comments on a blog. So if you are a frequent commenter and want to collect your varied opinions in one place it seems like a great solution.

I'm still not sure if I have it working properly. During all of my tests I was only able to see my comments and not the ones that came later in the thread, which would be a requirement for a conversation. The forums and support seem a bit sketchy and don't really offer many better answers than "make sure you integrate it into your blogging platform".

From the tally on the homepage you can see that things are going pretty well for the 300 by 300th listener drive and contest. We're at day 10 with 40 new listeners signed up and using their RSS feeds to download shows.

I need to put the finishing touches on the "Handle Moxie" page and should have that done in the next few days. The "Moxie" page will list those with Handles and the amount of entries they have collected by having new listeners enter it when they register.

All right then, the good stuff. Thanks to everyone who has signed up as a new listener or registered for a Handle! So what can I say about this so far? The emails and posts to sites and blogs describing the show have been really great. The most flattering part by far is that they were even written in the first place and second is that they spell my name right, with a "k".

What else is cool? Significant others who listen getting a Handle and then having their companion sign up as a new listener. That is cool Sharing with those closest to you and getting another entry is a good thing. I am sure some more interesting trends will show up but for now that is all that I have noticed.

How do you enter? Well . . .

1) Fill out the right form for you - *New* Listener or Get a Handle (current listener)
2) Verify your email address (Activates and qualifies those with a "Handle")
3) *New* listeners get activated and qualified by using their special RSS feed
4) 300th new listener and the person whose Handle they use win iPods AND
5) A drawing for 2 more iPods from everyone who entered!
