Looking for gay and artsy relocation opporunities? Columbus Ohio. While in San Fran ask the boys how many people in Columbus they know. The Short North is alt-lifestyle central.
You got the suburbs for schools, housing prices are a lot lower than comparable cities and it's very tech. Forbes rated it the number one up and coming tech city recently.
You can keep the Midwest mindset, still be in a Cowtown but get some of the best big city action without the big city problems.

Let me sell you on beautiful Palmer, Alaska, which is where I listen from! Anchorage is very gay-friendly (I am a professional hag) although the "discount shopping" opportunities for "nice things" are probably a little slimmer than IL. You may have to lower the bar and think about becoming a buyer for mobilehomepartreplacements.com
But all in all, a really cool place where regular people can look ultra-swanky sophisticated and educated without even trying.
