My thoughts about the cars: you're looking at this wrong, Kris. You're fixated on total value and looking backwards at what you've paid. I think you need to be focused on cash flow instead. You have two cars and a monthly outlay of ~$1000. You need one car. If you can get what you need (hint - the Jag doesn't sound like a practical option for Betsy) and reduce your monthly cash outlay, you will be ahead of the game.

Trade them both in and get a reliable used vehicle with some storage/room for the kids/Grandma/large boxes of treasure, etc. Don't spend so much time worrying about how far upside down you are on the Jag. Consider anything you have to pay to be a penalty for getting out of a bad debt and move on. 3-6 months down the road you'll have the transportation you need and more cash in your pocket because your car payments (and insurance) will have been reduced for a number of months.

It's all about cash flow. At least that's what's always worked for us.

Surely there's a vehicle out there you can agree on... a family vehicle with lots of room for kids and pets, but not a minivan. Have you considered finding yourself a nice, used conversion van? eBay is a great place to find unique vehicles like that. You could take it on road trips!

I agree with the first poster. You need a family car, not a Jag that you say has its problems. I have a Honda Mini van that I love. I bet you could find a great used car that you and Betsy could share and pay cash for it. BTW, we have always sold our cars through the newspaper and gotten the blue book price. Why would you deal with a dealer? They dont want your car! Good luck!

I agree with Margot. Don't trade in your cars at a dealer. They will only give you wholesale at best. Fix up, detail and post on Craigslist. If you have a local following I bet you may find someone who would love to have a
'famous podcaster's' car(cars). Not to mention a 'Wheel' contestant.

Side note: Is Betsy's performance on The Wheel anywhere online?
Thanks and keep up the great shows!

We still have the Wheel episode on the DVR. I can grab it and put it up on one of my sites if people are looking for it.

For those of you who are interested, here's the wheel episode. It's a big file - 190MB.

What do you use to open Betsy's Wheel vid? I tried WM player, and a few others.

It's an mp4. It should play in QuickTime.
